September 2007

Short year closes with success and some disappointment.

The 2007 Hill Climb season wound up recently and we managed to win all four races entered and set two new course records this year- Pikes Peak and Temple Canyon. On the other hand the Buffalo Peaks Hill Climb just won't give up the record and remains the only record still not claimed. I came close; missed it by about .24 seconds. A blink of an eye and we now have to wait two more years to try once again.

The final race of the season was at Lands End where a gas starved (it was my fault) run of 4:51 was good enough for our class win but a spin on run two negated a new record time and a fast time overall. Reviewing the data I was two seconds faster up to the spin. Still managing a 4:57 with the loss of about 10sec to right the car I threw away a potential 4:44 or about. There's always next year.

Buffalo Peaks has eluded my attempts to steal the record since 2003. Being an alternate year race there's no real way of preparing for this event. And the road surface is quite rocky and punishing. It appears to be getting worse in spots as time goes by. Coming close was nice but it remains seemingly to snub its nose at me.

Plans for 2008 remain unclear. Competing at Pikes Peak again remains largely a class issue. If the event chooses not to run the small class cars or lumps us in Open Wheel then I'll bow out. It's simply not financially prudent to race against the higher powered cars on that road. Having not run Monarch or Victor the past few years I may choose to go back there rather than the Peak.

Thanks to K&N Filters, MaxQdata, GoodYear Tires and Grassroots Motorsports Magazine for all their support this past season!

TCE Wins Pikes Peak for fourth year with New Record time!
<<< right click, view image

Todd Cook, owner of TCE, posted fast time in class with a record setting 11.37 time despite a quick spin and some motor issues.

The TCE/Wells Coyote ran well last week and after trying for the past few years I was finally able to get to the summit in record time. The car had a bit of a mis fire when I took off on the race run. Probably left over water from all the rain we had the previous few days...Despite that handling was good and the car ran 101mph into Engineers corner- actually a bit faster than the official recorded speed at the Picnic Grounds.

The spin came just past Glen Cove in what's called Cove Creek. The road is not practiced on there and while I picked a good line the surface levels out just a bit and it upset the cars balance putting me into a lazy half spin. With a left foot on the brake it stalled and luckily it re fired quickly and I spun it around pointed up hill. The event became a two halves race of sorts for me.

Reports had come down that the upper section as very slick and dusty. This proved very true and in the first left hand corner the car slid out with feedback about just how slick it really was. Finishing was key and with some luck I hoped the loss of time and mis fires below might still net a good time. Despite the slick surface I pressed on taking only what chances were necessary.

Crossing the finish line I kept my fingers crossed that we'd posted a decent time. The word came down that the run was 11:37 which put it about ten seconds under the record time! This with the spin and problems off the line. I can only think we'd have been in the mid 20s with no mistakes.

I want to thank friends and family; Chris, Gene & Wili, Barry, Mom, Dave, Kyle and Greg for all their help in making this goal a reality. Each played an important role in getting to the top and I couldn't have done it without their help.

Thanks also to K&N Filters, Goodyear Tire, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine and MaxQdata- showing some improvements can still be had with regard to tuning. We'll hope to exploit that soon as well.

With Buena Vista coming up next week the final goal is the record time there as well. Once in hand we will have all the records for the active races since 2000.

May 2007

The 2007 season kicked off well with the TCE Hill Climb car tearing it up at Temple Cayon in Canon City, CO. Extending the event win streak to five, owner/driver Todd Cook set a new class course record for the fourth straight year. The new mark is down to 3:09.3 and only about five seconds back from the overall course record of Jimmy Olson set back in 2004.

Much of the success of the weekend comes from the new shock and spring set up from D&D Race Technologies. Running a new QA1 shock package and the ability to tune the car via spring rate and set up has greatly stabalized the race car and provides more linear feedback to the driver. "The car took a bit of tuning to dial in the response I had wanted but with a small change in ride height and some changes in gas pressure we found the sweet spot" says Cook.

Also contributing to the success is the new MaxQData GPS recorder and data logger system. Allowing a full trace of the run on GPS shows were the car is fast and slow. Comparing runs via markers can aide in evaluating the runs and make each one better. MaxQData is on board with team TCE for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb were we plan to put this data to more extensive use. "Having the new GPS and MQ200 on the car should allow us optimum tuning of the motor and show us immediate results by viewing the GPS trace. We'll know where to go faster and where to slow down. I'm eager to get all of this up and running for Pikes Peak. Having this type of data on hand is confidence inspiring for our record attempt again this year."

Team TCE adds Grassroots Motorsports Magazine to this years list of supporters. Known as GRM to the hardcore fan, Grassroots is the magazine for the budget minded racer. From Autocrossing to Open Track days to their own yearly "Challenge" GRM plays a huge roll in meeing the needs track junkies all across the USA. It's Grassroots Motorsports Magazine for the enthusiast in all of us!

Hill Climb forum: Talk racing!

February 2007

TCE/Coyote is revised or 2007 record runs. The TCE race car is being readied for the 2007 racing season with a new QA-1 custom built coil over spring and shock package. These new shocks will allow for easier set up and better fine tuning for the varying surfaces of Pikes Peak and other races of the Colorado Hill Climb Association. With the ability to change both spring rate as well as bump and rebound settings this design should enable the car to get power to the ground better and making driving easier. Speaking of power....there's a new 3.4L powerplant being built for the 2007 season! This new motor should bump horsepower from about 330 to an estimated 360 and make the car faster in a straight line. With an eye on the Pikes Peak class record once again we hope this new motor will serve us well. Once again TCE should have the most powerfull n/a SHO motor known to exist!

I'm happy have MaxQData on board for the 2007 races. MaxQData produces affordable data aquistion systms and a very cool GPS based mapping system. I hope we can use this mapping to better learn the points of lost time on both Pikes Peak and other events! Producing, storing and reviewing both the GPS and on board data should be a big help. Thanks guys!

Winter maintenance resumes. With minor damage to the TCE/Wells Coyote under control we're looking at some further updates to this winning car. For the coming 2007 race season we'll be shaving a bit more weight off the car and persuing a coil over suspension package as well as a couple of other new items to be announced later.

The current Marvin Shaw shocks have served the TCE team well for seven years but lack of tuning and its elevated spring rates at high compression levels has contributed to frame damages more than one time. The planned move to coil overs will allow the team to optimize the set up for both dirt CHCA events and the new pavement at Pikes Peak.

Gas shocks have a rapidly building spring rate to them. Under hard compression we tested this rate at over 1000lbs per inch. Simply way too high for most gravel conditions. Tuning for both the dirt and pavement the past couple years has been both time consuming and costly. Different weight oils, rebuilds, internal spring changes and nitrogen pressures have net good results but with the current testing ban on Pikes Peak for Mini Sprint class and limited road time during race week we simply need a quicker method of adjustment for the car.

Weight of the car is always an on going issue. A revised side pod/cooling package should help the car lose a couple of pounds and increase efficiency. Target weight for 2007 is 1465lbs. with driver. Hopefully some changes here and elsewhere will allow the team to meet this goal.

***K&N renews support of Team TCE! I'm happy to report we will again be supported in part by K&N Filters for the 2007 season and look forward to promoting their products for a third year.

ROCK KILLS THE COYOTE!
TCE ended its limited competition this year with the car hard into the ditch at the Lands End Hill Climb. Ending an eighteen race win streak the TCE/Wells Coyote suffered damages to both front suspension arms as well as a broken steering rack.

"I went into a right hander about one mile up and as I turned in the rock in the middle of the road was point blank. I knew the car was simply too low to clear it and with a brush of the brakes even lower...I slammed the rock while turning right and this upset the car so bad that it just went straight (rather than right) and headed towards the ditch. I did what I could to try and save it but there was little hope"

As the car hit the inside birm of rocks and dirt it began to shed parts and bend others. Damages to the front and and the left rear became just too much despite the good wishes of many who offered help in the repairs. With the steering rack damaged the potential for further problems and lack of a strong car it was parked for the weekend.

Trevor Stewart went on to win his first Super Sprint race and have a great battle with Todd Reick who ended up second.

On board video will be posted soon, stand by!

TCE wins third Pikes Peak race!

Todd Cook, owner of TCE Performance Products weathered the storm to bring home his third win at the Mountain. For the second time in the past three years the Pikes Peak Hill Climb ran a shortened event in part due to swirling thunder clouds that poured rain, mist and snow on fans and competitors alike.

Cook arrived in Colorado Springs with one goal in mind; to reset the Mini Sprint class record on Pikes Peak held since 1997 by local hill climb expert Leonard Vahsholtz. "We had a chance at this record the past two years but weather in 2004 and my own mistake in 2005 prevented it from happening" Cook was quoted as saying to others who asked of his goals for 2006.

Day one pracite found the TCE/Wells Coyote working well but not to par as the team practiced on the upper half of the mountain. This years shortened schedule had teams running from 5am to 11am and trying to get in as many runs as possible. The long runs however combined with many new rookie competitors took their toll on the clock and the team logged in only four runs. That evening the car was gone over with some changes to the suspension being done to better get the car to 'set' and provide a more stable drive. "I made some changes to the shocks and ride height to get the car better balanced as I found it seem to bind up too much under compression" say Cook as he and Crew Chief Gene Pacheco readied the car for the second day.

Asked how the new pavement felt, Cook replied; "It's not too bad, the grip is higher but I'm leery of water on the road or ice in the morning. I think that we can pick up three to four seconds here no matter what." The water comment would prove to come back sooner than expected...  More...

TCE scores opening win with new record time!

Picking up where 2005 left off, the TCE/Wells Coyote wins the Super Sprint class at Temple Canyon for the third straight year. And for three years running re sets the class record time.

"Winning the opening event of the season is great and sets the tone for the coming season. But I'd never thought I'd be looking at three wins in a row let alone setting new record times each year" says owner/driver Todd Cook. "The car performed well and despite some set backs came through when needed. A big thanks as always to Gene and Barry for thier help. And to Donnie for some last minute frame welding that kept me in the race."

With a 'double split' format Cook was able to double enter this event entering both Super Sprint and Open Comp where the car competed against larger V8 powered cars. Finish results net a win in Sprint and a Third place in Open Comp. While not being able to hold onto second in Open Comp with a dnf on the second timed run, the winning time in Sprint was still good enough to secure the Second fastest time of all competitors putting the team solidly in the bonus money payout format- new for 2006.

"I burned up about 120 gallons of fuel to get to Canon City. I guess that bonus about covers my travel cost!" lol

Spring 2006

TCE welcomes new and returning sponsors!

We are pleased to have Red Line Synthetic Oil as the official oil and lubricant of the TCE/Wells Coyote. Red Line will be used exclusively due to its success in many forms of motorsport!

TCE files entry for the 84th running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with continued backing from VP Racing Fuels, K&N Filters and welcomes back Santa Fe Management; developer of the newest community in the White Mountains of AZ; Show Low Bluff.

From Todd Cook, owner/driver; "I'm happy to have such great supporters back! My good friend Barry Ebert missed out on our second win last year with his business efforts in Show Low and insisted that he be back on board for 2006."

Prep work on the TCE/Wells Coyote has begun for the season with efforts made to reduce the weight of the car a bit more and a full REM treatment from our friends at Taylor Race Engineering in an effort to free up some more power.
